This really is the best Snickerdoodles recipe I have ever tried. They always turn out thick, chewy, and soft. No other recipe compares!
The greatest recipes are ones that have been passed down in the family, so you can believe me when I say this is the best Snickerdoodles recipe ever. It was my mom’s, so it has been tested plenty of times on all six of my siblings growing up. Let me tell you – we all approve.
I have always been a huge fan of Snickerdoodles. Some of my favorite memories are of me, sitting on the kitchen counter with my mom, helping her roll Snickerdoodle dough balls in cinnamon sugar. Those kinds of memories are the best – the ones where you don’t remember much more than little snippets and pieces, but you know things were good and you felt happy. Those feelings come back every time I make Snickerdoodles. I guess you could say they are somewhat of a comfort food for me. That explains why I can eat five of them in a row without thinking twice about it.
I don’t just love snickerdoodles though. I love these snickerdoodles. I have tried quite a few of these ever-loved cookies in my day, whether they are homemade, store-bought, from a restaurant, or of some other variety and nothing beats these as the best Snickerdoodles recipe on the planet. They’re reliable, always turning out to be soft, buttery, chewy, and perfectly paired with a tall glass of milk. They are always a favorite in cookie exchanges and dessert bars.
I hope these cookies will make some memories for you and your family to cherish as well! – Sarah

It’s great that you have memories like that with your mom! I remember doing that with peanut butter cookies. 🙂 Snickerdoodles are my husband’s favorites, so he would love these!
Kris Wiltse says
This recipe is wonderful but your directions are a little confusing. You said roll into 1-3/4 in. Balls. So I did, way to big. It should say 3/4 to 1 in. balls. It just took a little longer to bake. My husband loves the end result. Thank you
Randi says
Yum! I will be trying this recipe ASAP 🙂
Mary says
What does the receipe mean 2 cups sugar divided?
Amber | Bluebonnets and Brownies says
Sarah, your snickerdoodles are just lovely. They’re one of my favorite cookies too. Now, what I’m about to say is controversial, but go with me on this. Next time you make these, substitute pumpkin pie spice for cinnamon. I swear to you, I thought snickerdoodles couldn’t get any better. I was proved wrong – and quite happily so.
Katie says
You can also use a combination of ground Cloves, cinnamon, AllSpice, Ginger and Nutmeg (as they are the same spices found as a blend known as Pumpkin Pie Spice).
But Apple Pie Spices would also work well for a unique/seasonal taste as they are similar in ingredients to Pumpkin Pie Spices. with the only differences being that Apple Pie Spice does not contain Ground Cloves or Ginger. 😉

Baking powder= 1part baking soda+2parts cream of tarter.

Actually, Baking Powder is a mix of baking soda and cream of tartar. So technically, you ARE using cream of tartar in this recipe. 🙂

Try these!! You will not be disappointed. I’ve made these about 10 times since I found the recipe because everyone always asks me for them. The dough is wet so make sure you grease your hands or put it in the fridge to chill for a few minutes.
Mick Adams says
G’day fom a mere male in Tasmania, saw a mention of the recipe for Snickerdoodles on YouTube, seemed vaguely rude as I had never heard of them.!! Made them today, and glad I did, very good, will be making them again as soon as I finish eating this lot, which won’t be very long the way I’m going. Thanks for the recipe.!!
Kailey says
So, I just made these! They are delicious! The only problem is that my first batch was too close together (i had put them a little closer than 3in together) but they still had their form so i was able to separate them. Then my second batch turn into 1 big snicker-doodle! They were so close together, and they had shifted to one side. I don’t know how that happened! Regardless they are so delicious and I’m so glad I found this recipe. Definitely going to make them again BUT I will chill them for a little bit after I roll them to prevent so much spreading! Thanks!
Christina says
This recipe has ruined store-bought biscuits for me. They are so yummy and chewy, they are now a family favourite snack
Hetal says
hi Sara, what should I do if I don’t want to use eggs ?

Do you think this recipe will work if I substituted butter for margarine?

I need to know what I am doing wrong that they fall when I take them out of the oven; otherwise taste great
Lillian says
Wow! These are delicious cookies. I don’t know if I made mine too small, but I ended up with a little less than 100 of these with a 36 cookie recipe. I gave some to my mom and she said adding 2 tsp of vanilla would improve the taste. I don’t know if it would work, I didn’t add the vanilla, but will try in the future. Thanks!
Dee Hansen says
I made these using my brand new Kitchen Aide Mixer. This was its maiden voyage. They turned out perfect. Thank you for this beginner recipe to get me going.
Jackie Mullinax says
Sarah, I pinned your recipe a good while back but hadn’t gotten around to making them yet. Then today after church I found out I needed to make some cookies ASAP to be given to the airmen living in dorms @ our local Air Force base. I brought up my Pinterest file of cookies & decided to give yours a try & immediately realized that it was almost identical to the one I’ve used for years. I thought I would pass along an idea I came up with several years ago when making them for Christmas. I put the cinnamon IN the cookies and then roll in red or green decorating sugar. They still have the same great taste but look so much more festive.
LucyL. says
Thank you for this delicious, simple, quick cookie. I started out my annual Christmas baking with this fabulous recipe and they baked at 10 minutes, exactly. My son asked for one and told me it was the best tasting cookie ever. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and thanks again!????????????????????
Cyndy Shively says
These are delicious! Very soft and tasty! I had to make them a little smaller than the recipe stated in order to get 36 cookies out of the batch, but this is definitely a keeper! I already want to make another batch!
Renee says
First time ever making Snicker doodles and these are delicious! Perfectly chewey and wonderful taste. Thank you so much!
Lori says
Going to try these today – only have unsalted butter on hand – will it change them?
Ashley says
Thank you so much for this recipe!! I don’t really bake, but these were soo easy to make (even for me haha) and turned out great!
amanda s says
made exactly to the recipe and they were moist, lovely, perfect amounts. I added for the second batch a tiny drop of vanilla (just personal preference) and chilled my dough because the first batch spread a bit. amazing. this is one of those print out recipes. thank you for a great go-to perfect batch!
Nancy Rascon says
We didn’t have any butter so I used what we had on hand – country crock spread. I thought they were ruined because the dough was too sticky to even think about rolling into balls, so I dumped the cinnamon sugar mix in and just dropped spoonfuls onto the cookie sheet. They spread out and made a thin, but so soft and chewy cookie! Not ruined after all. Thanks for your recipe! One of these days I’ll use actual butter.
Beatrice says
Very good and easy recipe. The only thing… they are very very sweet. I like sweets, cookies, candies, chocolate but those ones are extremely sweet. They go well with black coffee, tea or milk. Can the amount of sugar be reduced?
Cathy MacDonald says
These are DELICIOUS !!! I added brown sugar with the white sugar for the top, with extra cinnamon..and put a chocolate chip on top of one batch and a chocolate chip inside in another and just a plain batch. ????❤????
Thanks for posting!!!
Wendy says
THE BEST SNICKERDOODLES EVER! Seriously. Chewy on the middle and a lil crispy on the edges…perfecto.

This was my first time making snickerdoodles and I am so glad I found this recipe! I can’t even explain, the cookies had a crumbly crusty bite on the outside then a chewy delightful center. My husband and I ate it everyday with coffee/tea until we (sadly) ran out. Great recipe!

Hi! I only have a 1” cookie scoop. Would you recommend decreasing bake time to 8min or 7min? Also, we love love cinnamon, have you ever added cinnamon to the dough instead of just rolling into cinnamon and sugar or do you think it’s too strong.
Lauren says
Love love LOVE these cookies! Thank you so much for sharing.
Anastasia says
these look good
Toni says
Once the dough is mixed, can it be froze or kept in the fridge for a couple if days?

Love Snickerdoodles!
Sometimes instead of rolling in cinnamon sugar, I dip the tops in sprinkles or colored sugar (sanding sugar).
A lot easier than roll out sugar cookies and very good!

David N Polister says
These were very good. Seemed like too much butter unless we did something wrong. Very sticky and creamy with 2 sticks of butter. We added more flower, got a little better, but still really sticky and not really got into a ball. Will make again and try some adjustments.
Madison says
These came out delicious! They were both chewy and incredibly thin and crispy. only need to put a tiny amount of batter on the baking sheet to prevent them from baking together.
Cathy says
How do you store them
Alex says
Would these freeze up well if rolled into balls ahead of time?
Lisa A Yrigollen says
Cookies didn’t flatten out like my other recipe, however, they were delicious and soft.
